Stainless steel sheet | Dimensions, Thickness, and Weight calculation methods
The standard dimensions of stainless steel sheet are determined by three parameters: width, thickness, and length. Among them, the standard widths of stainless steel sheet are typically 800mm, 1000mm, 1215mm, 1220mm, 1500mm, and up to 1524mm. The standard thicknesses range from 0.3mm, 0.5mm, 0.6mm, 0.8mm, 1mm, 1.2mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 15mm to 20mm.
The weight of a stainless steel sheet can be calculated using the formula based on its specifications: Weight = Thickness (T) × Width (W) × Length (L) × Specific Gravity (D) of the stainless steel sheet. Please refer to the standard weight table of stainless steel sheet here.
Stainless steel sheet are materials rolled into thin sheets according to corresponding specifications based on application requirements. Now, let’s learn about the standard thicknesses of stainless steel sheet and how to calculate their weights with OrinoxSteel.

Dimensions of Stainless Steel Sheet
The dimensions, or specifications, of stainless steel sheet are expressed in three units: Thickness (T) x Width (W) x Length (L), with the unit being millimeters (mm).

The standard specifications of stainless steel sheet from OrinoxSteel factory are as follows: The length (L) of stainless steel sheet is usually fixed at 3,000mm. The width (W) can be flexibly adjusted between 850 – 1524mm according to customers’ processing needs.
Focusing on fixing the length and width of stainless steel sheet and determining standard dimensions through the stainless steel sheet specification table helps ensure actual output and quantity. Even for projects that need to be implemented quickly, it can provide enterprises with standard, timely, and fast products.
Thickness of Stainless Steel Sheet
The thickness (T) of stainless steel sheet from OrinoxSteel ranges from 0.3 – 20mm, reflecting the diversity of products and the company’s strong production capacity, which can meet the needs of most industries.
Stainless steel sheet with a thickness of 0.3-0.5mm are commonly used in ordinary household products. The most standard dimension of standard stainless steel sheet is 0.5mm in thickness, which is a highly applicable international standard.
In the industrial field, the most commonly used thickness of stainless steel sheet is 3-12mm. A thickness of 8mm is suitable for the shipbuilding industry. Stainless steel sheet with a thickness of >10mm perform more stably when used in chemical environments such as chemical storage tanks and oil pipes.
Specific Gravity of Stainless Steel Sheet
The specific gravity of a stainless steel sheet refers to the weight of 1 cubic meter of the material. Unlike density, it is calculated using the following formula:
d = P / V
Where:
- d = specific gravity (N/m³)
- P = weight (N)
- V = volume (m³)
From this, we can derive a simplified formula:
d = Density (D) × 9.81 (constant)
The specific gravity of stainless steel sheets varies by grade:
- Stainless Steel 201 = 7,930 × 9.81 = 77,793 N/m³ (meaning 1 cubic meter of 201 stainless steel weighs approximately 77.8 tons)
- Stainless Steel 304 = 7,930 × 9.81 = 77,793 N/m³
- Stainless Steel 316 = 7,980 × 9.81 = 78,283 N/m³
- Stainless Steel 430 = 7,700 × 9.81 = 75,537 N/m³
How to Calculate the Weight of Stainless Steel Sheet
The weight of a stainless steel sheet refers to the weight of a single sheet based on the supplier’s specifications, which depends on its dimensions. Knowing how to calculate this weight helps you measure proactively, as weight tables are not always available.
The common formula for calculating the density of each stainless steel grade based on its alloy content is:
D = m / V
Where:
- D = density
- m = mass (in kg)
- V = volume (in m³)
Through research, the densities of the 4 most common stainless steel grades are as follows:
- Stainless Steel 201: 7.93 g/cm³ = 7,930 kg/m³ (i.e., 1 cubic meter of 201 stainless steel weighs 7,930 kg or 7.93 tons)
- Stainless Steel 304: 7.93 g/cm³ = 7,930 kg/m³
- Stainless Steel 316: 7.98 g/cm³ = 7,980 kg/m³
- Stainless Steel 430: 7.70 g/cm³ = 7,700 kg/m³
The weight of a stainless steel sheet (in kilograms) is calculated using the formula:
Weight = Thickness (T) × Width (W) × Length (L) × Density (D) of the stainless steel
Example: A 304 stainless steel sheet with 0.3mm thickness × 850mm width × 3000mm length = 0.3 × 850 × 3000 × 7.93 = 6.066 kg
Since some large stainless steel sheet cannot be measured with conventional tools, knowing how to calculate their weight ensures more accurate measurements and easier logistics planning during use.
